Expert Quilter to Offer Classes at Iowa State Fair

Master quilter and Iowa native Patrick Lose will offer up his artistic expertise as an instructor in the Fabric and Threads Department at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. "Nothing Compares" to the Fair's daily offerings of Make It and Take It classes and displays of hundreds of creative quilts, clothing items and more. Lose's classes will offer Fairgoers a hands-on opportunity to create some of his most popular quilt designs.

The following students were recognized at Mount Mercy University Honors Convocation:   Lynn Tschiggfrie, Atkins, Kappa Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society of Nursing  Connie Havran, Norway, Kappa Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society of Nursing   Sarah Hill, Shellsburg, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges  and   Lisa Stiles, of Vinton, Kappa Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society of Nursing   for outstanding achievement at Mount Mercy University during Honors Convocation this spring.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Paul Smith

Paul Smith, from Detroit, Mich., is a member of Oak 6 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 6 is made up of seven people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.

NCCC Cedar 3 helping restore history in Delaware County

By: Trent Roberts AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 3 is working with the Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) in Hopkinton, Iowa to restore and maintain the old Lenox College campus. So far, Cedar 3 has repainted the Lenox room in Clark Hall, the old girls dormitory. The Lenox room holds artifacts from the history of the college, such as books, documents, trophies and photographs of students that attended the college throughout the years.

Flatbergs celebrate 50th Anniversary

The family of Chuck and Genny (Generose) Flatberg would like to wish them a Happy 50th Anniversary! Chuck and Genny were married June 15th, 1963.  Please help them celebrate with a card shower! Smith-Geater VFW Ladies Auxiliary 8884 receives awards

Smith-Geater VFW Ladies Auxiliary 8884 was instituted on April 22,2012.  This was the first year to participate in the Departmemt of Iowa Ladies Auxiliary Convention.  It was held at Red Oak, Iowa on June 6-9,2013.  Jeanette Henry-President &Historian and Donna Roepke-conductress,musician, trustee of our local ladies auxiliary attended.

Callan Meskimen named to Dean's List at Morningside Colleg

 Callan Meskimen, daughter of Stephanie Meskimen of Walker, Iowa, was named to the Dean's List at Morningside College for the 2013 spring semester. Each semester the Dean's List recognizes students who achieve a 3.67 grade point average or better and complete at least 12 credits of coursework with no grade below a "C-." William C.

AmeriCorps NCCC Lends a Helping Hand

By: Teonna Clark   AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 1, from Vinton, Iowa, is collaborating with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers in Coralville, Iowa to help rebuild trails, maintain the dam and pull invasive plant species. It has been six weeks since the project started, and Oak 1 has pulled over 700 pounds of garlic mustard, installed seven water bars and reconstructed eroded hiking trails.

Upper Iowa University Announces Spring 2013 Dean's List

Upper Iowa University names its 2013 Spring Dean's List. To be honored, the undergraduate must have earned a minimum 3.50 GPA for the semester and be enrolled as a full-time student.
